Press Association. jNafier, June 24. The Sum-erne Court opened before Mr Justice Cooper to-day. His Honor commented on the length of the calendar—3l charges against 17 persons—and said it was unfortunate that in a district so prosperous there should be so much crime. Tho list contains no very serious cases. The slander suits Plowman v.. Gleeson and Simson v. Thorley have been settled out of court by tho defendants apologising. Robert Prust, alias Priest, who pleaded guilty to burgary and theft, was sentenced to three years' imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal. Nelson, June 22. The Supreme Court opened to-day before Justice Button. On the Grand Jury being sworn Mr Maginity, barrister, took exception to another solicitor's managing clerk being on the Grand Jury and chosen foreman thereof. His Honor said nothing could be done, as tho jury had been sworn, but where possible solicitors' clerks should be exempted from serving on juries. Peter Gilmour, aged IV, pleaded guilty to assaulting a young girl, the charge being altered to common assault from one of intent, as the father of the accused said he had given his son a sound thrashing. The Judge ordered prisoner to come up .for sentence when called upon on the understanding that the father would give hiin a further sound thrashing in tho presence of a constable.
