' According to statements made at the meeting of Wellington Hospital Trustees to-day there has lately been a large increase in the cases of sickness treated in the hospital. _ At present the patients number 279 in addition to 348 out patients. Scarlet fever lias been responsible for a large number of cases. At the meeting of Martou Ratepayers’ Association last evening re resignation of Mr A. H. Kuigge as secretary was accepted, and Mr Mogridgo was appointed to the vacancy. Mr J. McEldowuey consented to remain as president till the end of the year. A large number of representatives of Friendly Societies from various parts of the colony have arrived in Wellington to take part in the Conference which commences this afternoon. Delegates will meet the New Zealand Council of the British Medical Association and discuss subjects which have for some time past been in dispute between the orders and lodge doctors.

Hockey is progressing favourably in Marton, but not as well as it should. The same players appear at practice on every occasion. There should be a full muster of the members on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Marton Club will never win a game if members do not attend practices and learn to play in their places. It is hoped that on Wednesday afternoon there will bo a record attendance. There will probably be a game with one of the Wanganui teams shortly. A -working bee lias been formed for this evening to roll the ground. Nelson Poultry Association has decided to hold an egg laying competition next year, commencing April Ist. The competition is to be a test of early batched pullets, of using covered sheds but no grass, runs, and of the Logan system of selecting layers and non-layer, the birds to be purebred not more than twelve or under six months.

At Oamaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday Margaret Andrews was convicted of selling liquor in a no license district and fined ,£lO and costs. The case was a result of the police raid on 26th April last when a quantity of concealed liquor was seized. The defence was that the liquor was hidden by defendant’s husband for private use, but the Magistrate held that the latter’s evidence was not credible and he considered the circumstances pointed to sale.

Under the auspices of the Sandon Branch of the- Farmers’ Union, on Saturday evening next, in the Council Chambers, Mr J. G. Wilson will deliver an address of a particularly interesting nature to all engaged in agricultural pursuits. The subject will be, Artificial manuring and its relation to different crops and soils. This is a question in which every farmer is deeply concerned, and no one should miss the opportunity of being presont. A general discussion of the subject will follow' the address. Mr Horace J.
