RUSSIAN HORRORS..
i A London paper has received the following account of torture in Eus- ! sian territory from a correspondent. ! The village of Kuva would appear to ba in the Province of Fergana, iu Russian Central Asia, of which ; Margelan is the capital:— ? In the paper Samarkand appears the following news from the town of New Margelan ; On February 10th final sentence was p rased in the matter of an attack in the village of Kuva upon the house of a rich money-lender, from whom JGSOOO was taken. The tempcrary council of war of the district, sentenced three men to death by hanging, six to laVour in the mines for various periods, and six were acquitted. The trial was conducted j ; with open doors, and many of the j public were present. I A disagreeable impression was - produced on those present by the : diseloiure iu !he course of the trial ; of torture, to which it appears the accused, persons were subjected by : the djigitai (officials) of the Kuva ; village administration at the time of the preliminary examination. They j poured kerosene over the back of one , of the prisoners, and then set alight ;to it. He showed the burns at the | trial. In the case of another prisoner the torture was- unmentionable. It , is held that the native administration ! were led away by an excesss of ; caution.
