Master-Gunner Richardson, of the Permanent Artillery, has been promoted to a captaincy and the position of chief instructor of artillery of the colony.

At Bulls Magistrates’ Court this morning George Rhodes, proprietor of Rangitikei Hotel, was fined £ls and costs for having supplied liquor to a Maori for consumption off the premises. Sergt. Dowdeu prosecuted and Mr Collius was for the defence. The case was laid under sub-section 40 of Licensing Act, 1894.

A meeting ot farmers at Otahuhn resolved to form a Wholesale Milk Supply Association. Owen McCourt, of Cornwall, a hockey player, received injuries which resulted in his death during a match between the local and Ottawa teams at Cornwall, Canada, on March Oth. Hough play led to a light with sticks, and McCourt was struck on the head by Charles Masson of the Ottawa team. Masaon was arrested and will bo tried for manslaughter. Several players were injured in the moloo. The growing tendency to brutality in Canadian sports is causing a loud outcry from press, public and pulpit. Trouble is being experienced by the officers of tho Government in collecting the fines imposed by the Arbitration Court on the slaughtermen who went out on strike recently at the Islington and Pareora freezing works. A fair number of the men have paid up, but some of them decline to pay or to make what, is considered a reasonable effort ■ to meet the fines by instalments. Every effort has been made to have matters satisfactorily settled, but in a minority of tho cases without avail so far. It is therefore very probable that at the next sittings of tho Supreme Court- at Timarn and Christchurch, the defaulters will be cited to appear before the court to show cause why a writ of attachment should not be issued against them. Lyon—Sutcliffe) that this OonueiL on behalf of the occupiers of registered factories in the Borough of Marton protests against the withdrawal of the permission to close factories on the usual shop half holiday, as such a course is highly inconvenient to both cm* ployer and employees.
