THE VOLCANIC SCARE.
(Press Association.) Ohakune, April 25,
There are no further signs of activity on Ruapehu, but it is reported that a portion of the eastern side of the crater of. Ngaruhoe has been broken clown by ejected material. The most recent ascent of Ruapehu was made at Easter time by two officers of the Public Works Department at Ohakune. They found the crater lake steaming, with indications of the ice walls having been undermined by hot water, and dust and a quantity of stone were found on the snow surrounding the crater. Some of the largest pieces of material were a foot in diameter. A portion of one brought back burned with a blue sulphurous flame. These stones had been ejected hot as they had melted their way into the hard snow and ice.
JT"' A P ril 26. "* A Taihape gentleman, who has arrived at Taihape from Tokaanu, states that hot springs at Tokaanu are blowing up a great height. In the early morning thousands of small jets of dry steam can be seen rising on the western side of the high ground at Tokaanu and these have been in existence years but are now more active. Ruapehu is a snowclad mountain all the year round but seen from the base it gave the impression that similar -jets of steam were bursting all round tho summit causing the snow to melt and giving an appearance of eruption; and for some days Ngaurahoe has been omitting large volumes of black sulphurous : snioko, iff. appearaneo like a thick cloud caused by a thunderstorm. He considers tho reports published have been gi'eatly exaggerated.
