THE SYDNEY STRIKE.

Press Association. —Copyright. Sydney, April 25.

The action of the Newcastle trimmers deciding not to wcrk ships which usually coal in Sydney has given rise to an interesting point. Several shipping companies, including Huddart-Parker, have boen in the habit of sending some steamers to Newcastle for bunking and others to Sydney, but as the majority coaled at Newcastle at one time or the other it remains to be seen how the Newcastle trimmers will apply these cases. Strike matters are quiet. The strikers round the employers' bureau and ships coaling are much fewer and less demonstrative. Free labourers are allowed to pass almost unnoticed. The Coal Lumpers' Union is making overtures to seamen and the Wharf Labourers' Union join issue in carrying on the struggle. At a meeting of the lumpers to-day Mr, Watson was present and discussed the situation." He reported that the meeting favored a conference with employers with a view to arriving at a settlement. A meeting of shipowners and the Seamen's Union is arranged for to morrow, when affairs relating to the strike will be considered, including the ' action of this French mail steamer Pacifique in coaling ■with her Arab crew, and the Peninsular Company's India with her own crew. The Niwaru, which should have sailed for New Zealand to-day, is delayed as she Is able only to obtain 1000 instead of 2000 tons required. A number of vessels are obtaining coal at Brisbane,

Sydney, April 20.

There has been a renewal of the creep between the 400 and 500 feet level in Block Ten mine and miners in the vicinity have been withdrawn. Tho management states it is only a local movement and not of a serious nature.

The coal lumpers have issued an appeal to unionists in Australia a sling for sympathy and moral assistance, urging them to do their utmost to prevent such an influx of labourers as, might enablo employers to succeed in their desire to crush the union. Delegates from the Lumpers' Union attended tho Labor Council and explained their position, and stated that the only obstacle in the way of a settlement was the demanded removal of a stevedores' foreman to whom tho lumpers obr jected. The Council offered the services of its executive officers with a view to bringing about an early settlement.
