As soon as the presentation of prizes was over, appreciation of Mr Newman’s generous gift was shown in a hearty manner—three lusty cheers being given by the assemblage in acknowledgment of the President’s generosity. Several well-bred ponies took part in the racing at Fern Plats polo sports. Mr A. Cameron was represented by two of the fastest ponies in the district. He started Lochaber in a three-furlong sprint and was beaten by Cakewalker, who showed a rare turn of speed. Lochaber is by Tnpuhi out of a Ross mare. He won the Final Handicap at the recent Hawke’s Bay polo sports. The other pony Bobby, Itepo—Ngaruru—who secured first place in the cup race won the same event last year. The thoroughbred pony Slavey, The Workman —She, was seen out in the Final Race, but had no condition and ran unplaced. Slavey is now owned by Mr Henry Westland. Mr A. R. Bryce’s Socks, rnuuer-np for the Points’ Prize, was started in most of thO| events and was first to catch the judge’s eye in two races, besides running a good second in the Final Go. Socks was greatly admired at the Hawke’s Bay tournament. He is a first class polo pony and Mr Bryce has made a good purchase. Ho secured him from the Carnarvon district. This is the second time Mr Henry Westland lias won the hurdle event with the Outlaw, a nice looking pony by Orossgnard. Ho was nicely ridden by bis owner in Saturday’s event, and secured a half head verdict. Tho most successful pony at the sports was Mr H. J. Cameron’s Vixen, Reynard—Raveusworth marc. Before the presentation of prizes were made the President, Mr E. Newman, made a neat speecii. He was sorry tho weather had prevented a number of people from attending because they had missed a thoroughly enjoyable day’s sport. The Fern Flats Polo Club had had a most successful season and this was in a large measure due to the efforts of Mr A. R. Bryce, who had made a very excellent and energetic secretary and who had given a capital piece ot ground for the free use of the duo. They had taken part in the Hawke s Bay*tournament and although unsuccessful they had. proved a fine lot of chaps socially. The ladies of the district, had l)GGii partxcuiHrl}- kind to the members in providing refreshments and ho proposed nearly votes of thanks to them, to Lie secretary for his services and the donors of special prizes, which were earned by acclamation. Hearty cheers-were, then given for Mrs Milne, who kindly presented the prizes and for tlie President for his challenge oujj.
