“RAISING THE WIND.”
Many and diversified are the ways of “ raising the wind,” but a somewhat novel method was ventilated before the Christchurch Court recently, when Thomas Bell was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond, in that he did on April 7th endeavor to impose on one George Barr&ll by a false verbal representation in order to obtain money. Accused went to Mr Barrel!, an undertaker, and told him his sitter was de:d and her bedy was lying in tho morgue, and bo instructed him to tske a coffin along to tho morgue. I He stated he had .£SO in tho bank, I and be would pay him the day follow- '■ icg. In the meantime he would be | obliged if the undertaker could advance him a small sum. Mr ■ Barrell communicated with the I police, and found that there was no body in the morgue at all, and the i statement was a pure fabrication. I The accused pleaded guilty, and was • sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment.
