ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
Per Press Association. Gisboene, April 16. At the inquest on Henare Haawhe the jury returned a verdict that deceased met his death on Gisborne-Karaka railway by by being caught by an engine, no blame being attachable to any of the officials, who used every care and diligence. Death was due, as the doctor’s testimony stated, from shock to the. nervous system. The dead body of Miss Elizabeth Wood, aged 64, formerly of Auckland, was found in Taruheru river this afternoon. Deceased, who resided with a married niece, had been in poor health and had gone out last evening unknown.at the time to others. Auckland, April 16. A sad drowning accident occurred at Kiritehere, 20 miles from Kawliia, on Friday afternoon. A little girl, four years, daughter of a settlor, Klien, fell into a creek and was swept into a deep hole by a strong current. The only witness was a child of seven. She ran for the child’s mother, who jumped in -fully clothed without a moment’s hesitation and was swept away by the strong current. She regained the bank and made., another unsuccessful attempt at rescue. The child’s body was recovered two hours afterwards. The remains were carried six miles through a bush track to a burial place, several settlers taking turns with the corpse. Lucy Sevan, married, aged 31, died under chloroform administered for the purpose of operation. Her husband resides at Eaglan. Hokitika, April 16. The body of Henry Feeney, aged 25, a miner, missing since 2nd;April, was found on the beach between Hokitika and Tcreraakail this afternoon. CHBisTCHUiicit, April 16. A man named Eobert McAnulty, of Ashburton, was run over by the midday express near Addington to-day and Killed. CHEisTcnuEcn, April 10.
A middle aged man, name unknown, apparently a farm labourer, fell off the second South epxress at Addington at noon to-day and was instantaneously killed. He had a return ticket to Rakaiaiu his pocket. Hans Wilson, charged with shooting at his wife with intent to do bodily harm, was remanded for a week for inquiry as to his mental condition.
At tiro Magistrate’s Court, the station sergeant stated that the reports of tho police were that the accused wont home with his wife from tho Exhibition. No sooner had they reached home then he pulled out a revolver and shot at her. He missed her and then turned the weapon on himself, hut again his had marksmanship prevented a tragedy.
