THE AIMS OF LABOUR.

The Trades and Labour Council, after discussion of the ' question whether the Arbitration Act has been beneficial or otherwise to workers in New Zealand, decided to instruct its delegates to the conference that Auckland Council is of opinion that the Act as it stands has been of benefit to the colony. The Council approved a remit to tho Conference urging G overnment to . increase the import duty on all printed matter at least 25 per cent. The platform adopted by the labor candidates for the municipal election includes rating on unimproved values, power of initiative to demand a vote on any policy proposal, bettor sanitary maintenance of back streets, municipalising of tho sanitary service, municipal markets for fish, frnit, and meat'depot for sterilisation of tho City’s milk supply, workers’ homes and speedy demolition of insanitary dwellings, union wages to be fixed for all employees of tho Council.
