PAPAKURA.

PAPAKURA TOWN BOARD The usual monthly meeting of the Papakura Town Board was held on Monday last, the members present being Messrs R, M. Gillespie, (Chairman), W. B. Linstrom, H. T. Markwick, W. Richardson, H. A. Lloyd, and T. D. Campbell with Mr Harold Wilson (clerk). Mr P. Holt was also present but took no part in the proceedings.

MISCELLANEOUS The use of the blind roadway at the back of the freehold sections lately occupied by Mr J. Hatu waß applied for on behalf of Miss Ethel Dalton, who offered to pay rental for the same. - The Chairman stated that the road would not be used for some considerable time. The matter was deferred to enable enquiries to be made.

Complaint was made of the state of the Hunua Road. Mr A. McVeigh, the Board's Foreman stated that he was working on the Board's part of the road but so far had not completed it. The County Council's portion was also in a bad state. The Clerk was instructed to reply to the complaint stating that the matter was being attended to and also to write to the Franklin County Council drawing its attention to its portion of the road.

MrE. Clarke made application for the Board to open the road fronting his property, Lot 82, Section XI, as he was desirous of erecting a residence on his section—On the motion of the Chairman the matter was referred to the Work's Committee.

THE NEW SALEYARD3 A letter was received from the Manager of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company stating that he had visited the new saleyards and was pleased wiih what had been done at the yards but had been greatly disappointed to find that practically nothing had been done towards making the road approach to the yards passable. As the opening of the yards would take place on October Ist he asked that such should be attended to before that date.

The Chairman stated that the Clerk had replied that the road referred to was not under the jurisdiction of the Board.

SANITARY SERVICE

The Sanitary Committee reported that they had considered a number of applications for exemption from the sanitary service and they recommended that the whole matter of exemptions should be left in abeyance until after the election.

The report was adopted. COUNTY BOUNDARY ROADS

The Works' Committee reported that the Foreman of the Manukau County Council had waited on the Works Committee for the purpose of explaining in detail the account for £74 between the Council and the Board. The Foreman (Mr Dixon) explained where the work had been done and stated that lately he had done several small jobs on the Boundary Road, which he had not debited against the Board. He was of opinion that the Board had nothing to complain of as to the account. Consideration of the report was held over until the special meeting to be held next Monday. FINANCE Accounts amounting to £153 3s Wd were passed for payment. i-'INAL MEETING It was agreed to hold a special meeting of the Board on Monday next in ord°r to conclude matters prior to the Board going out of olfice.

Following on th« of Mr K. M. Gillespie that in recogni tion of his services to the district and of the fact that he wat the first chairman of the Board, occupying that position in all for 21 years, a huge framed photograph of the lato Mr James Walker now adorns the walls of the Board's office. The portrait, to which is attached a silver plate inscribed "James Walker— Chairman, 1883-1886, 1890— 1908," was formally unveiled by Mr Gillespie at the Board's moeting last .Monday in the presence of relatives of the deceased gentleman. Mr Giilospie remarked that the late Mr Walker was a member of the Board for 2G years and was held in the highest esteem as aa able administrator and honest friend. Mr W. Richardson, who had been a fellow member of the Board with the late Mr Walker, added his testimony to what lie had accomplished, as did also Mr Campbell, who mentioned that he had been a shipmate with the deceased gentleman. Mr James Walker then expressed appreciation of the Board's thoughtfulness in thus recognising the work porformed by his father.

Mr Robert Hutchinson has dis posed of his Taradale farm to Mr V Ilatrick, of Birkendale.
