DRURY.

PROGRESS AND SUB-DIVISION Thanks to the increased land values which have in many cases tempted owners to snb-divids their holdings there h"s been a considerable increase in the number o! comfortable horaestead3 in the Drury road dia tiict during the past two years, and as the district road rates are collected on the capital value a few new houses buve an . p.ppreciabla effect on the rate roll, though it might be reasinibly claimed that each new house ir.diiectly demands an equivalent from the roads. There is rtill plenty of room fur closer settlement and tbis is what we require, not only in thi3 district but all over New Zealand. There are holdings in the iJrury district which will, I predict, in the near futjro be supporting at lsast three families instead of one as at present. Many are beginning to realise that with better farming fifty acres of land might be made mora profitable than one hundred. The farmer wto can so reduce his holding not only relieves himself of practically half his responsibility, but is a benefactor to his district and country. Mr Jos. Flanagan was about the first to start cutting up, as it is commonly termed, and others are following his scod example. On one of Mr Flanagan's properties upon which only a shantv existed a few yea s ago, now stands six comfortable homes occupied by the same number of prosperous families. If the number of superior houses lately erected is an indication of prosperity the Drury farmers should be in a good way. Mr J. Flanagan has lately completed a very line residence at a co3t of about one thousand pounds. The R c .v. Mr Hewelet has also erected a very nice h use which, standing ai it decs cn an excellent site, is quite En ornament to the district. Mr George Bremner, having sold part ot his Waiboehe road properly, h:s erected a substantial house on the other portion. Messrs Morgan and H. Cosasy have also each built neat cuttages, whiie Mr Bregmati, who some little time since purchased the block of land known as Fitzgerald's, has a cumfo»table residence in course of erection. Mr LSregman is turning into profitable account a block oi land which in consequence of years of neglect had become a wilderness. Mr Nobbs' well-known property has again changed hands at a satisfactory figure, BAND Of-' HOPE.

The monthly meeting of the li;r.d of Hope held on Wednesday evening, passed oil' most successfully. A veiy good programme was provided. Musical items were furnished by the Misses MeNaughton, and Messrs J. Brooks, Fielding, istemp a on and Fyt'e rendered very abla assistance with recitations and sorgp, etc., while a few selections on Mr J. H. Brooks' gramaphore were greatly appreciated by the youngsters. As usual the item uf the evening was an action song by tl.e children. *lhis was really (.o~d, atd rightly deserved the prolonged applause which refused to subside ir.ti! the little folk trippul back on to the st-:ge. METHODIST CONCERT. On Fridi.y evening a concert was given in aid of the Methodist parsonage furds. Although the eve.inig was very wet there was a fair attendance. An excrllent programme was providul The principal items were furnished by Misses MeNaughton, Misits Flanagan, Mi?s Galloway and Mr Allen McElwain, if Auckland. ALTERING THE HALL. So far the Hall Extension Committee has been very successful iu the matter of collection of funds, and the necessary alterations to the hall is now fairly well assured.
