[By our Travelling Roprestjfjtttive.] ROWING. On Saturday, 23rd, the Rowing Club held a trial fours, when five teams competed lor the president's trophies. In the first heat E. Hunter (stroke), D. Hassett, H. fiildcibeck and L. Barron met T. Wright (stroke), K. Hunter, S. Dobion and R. Kelly, T. Wright's team wir.niig by two lengths. 'ln the second heat C. Rocse (stroke), W. Harold, F. Tregoweth and R. Barron met M. Sweeney (stroke), T. Cooper, F. Wright and G. Hammerton, C. Roose's team winning by two lengths. Semi-final: W. Hewett (stroke), 1. Hunter, L. Rowlands, and G. Tribe versus T. Wright's crew resulted in a vin for the latter team by half a canvas. In the final. C. Roose's team v. T. Wright's, a strenuous struggle took place. The former assumed the lead and hell it for most of the course till close to Lome Wright's crew then forged ahead, but by adesperate effort on the last few lengths Roose's team m-:de a spurt and won by about 12 inches. Mr J. Keith acted as judge in his usual fair and impartial manner. After the final, tea was dispensed by the Mercer ladies, and an erijoyable afternoon spent. SCHOOL CONCERT. An excellent concert was held in aid of the school picnic, there being a big attendance and a fine programme. The chairman (Mr H. S. Valentine) explained that upwards of 100 tickets had been told by the children., showing the support received. Thanks were due to Mias Clark, Mrs Bush, Mis C. E. Elliott a d Messrs Banon, Bilderbeck, Cmwhuret, Keats and otheri for assistance. . The 1912 balance sheet showtd a balance in rand of £l7 13s 9d. Certificates of proficiency for standard 6 at the last examination were won by Roy Bilderbeck, Nellie Beamish . and Pearl Keat; first-class attendance certificates were gained by Roy Bilderbeck and Stanley Bilderbeck, who were present every time the school was open during 1911. Prizes for attendance accompaaying these certificates were presented by Mr C. T. Edwards. This year Mts Harrison has promised prizes for attendance to standard 3 girls and sta-.dard 4 buys. The euchre nights had been successful, the credit balance being £4 17s 7d. Championship prize for ladies, presented by Mrs Barron, was won by the donor with 98 points. JWiss Milly Beamish2, 93 points; Miss R. Wright 3, 92 points; Miss E. Wright 4, 9Cpoints. The men's prize, prtsented by Mr Valentine, was won by Mr Frid Wright, 111 points; Mr Wilson 2, 94 points; Mr T. Wright 3, 86 points. Part I. of the concert programme comprised an overture, with violin solo by Miss Clark, and a cantata, "The Fairies" Part 11. consisted ot pianoforte duet, "Remembrance," Bertha and Clarice Walsh; school song, "Moonlight Song of the Fairies"; song and chorus, "Silver Bell," Doris Bush: piano solo, "General Grant's March," George Bevan; Maypole dance; piano solo, Mona Kelly; recitation, Jessie Watts; nursery rhymes; the niggers, "Whistling Jim," Fred Arnold; song "Polly Wolly Doodle," Laurence Pickett; recitation and song, "Pushed it Through the Window," niggers; song, "Doodah Day," Sam Elmore; marching song, boys. The whole function was most enjoyable.
