POKENO.

I omitted in my last notes to record the death of one of the old " Ganges" settlers in the person of Mrs Hugli Hamilton, who passed away at her daughter's (Mrs Robert Stewart) residence. Mr and Mrs Hamilton had only arrived here some few months from Drury and were living in retirement with their daughter. The deceased lady had attained the age of 74 years, and was loved by all who knew her kindly and agieeable nature. The funeral obsequies were carried out liy the Rev. Thos. Fisher, assisted by Mr J. MiTuvish, in the presence of a number of deceased's friends and relatives. Mr Harold Larsen, who mot with such a serious accident on the Mercer road last week, is, I am pleased to say, making good progress towards recovery at latest advices, though it will be some considerable time before he is able to follow his usual occupation.

Owing to the recent heavy rains the railway deviation works at this end havo had to be stopped and the men transferred to Whangarata. It is intended to recommence w.jrk here next week if the state of the weather warrants it.

Maungatangi has now been reopened with a mail once a week only. Mr J. C. Paterson is the new postmaster.

Mr T. A. Gibbs, of Razorback, has had a slice of bad luck recently. About 3 o'clock in the morning his house took tiro, and he and Mrs Gibbs and family had just time to clear out of the burning building without paving anything. Mr Gibbs is a heavy loser, as the insurances are practically nil, and in addition his son is in a very bad way through fright and shock to the system. Now that the spring is virtuuJ'y upon us, and as so many of our setters have suffered losses in tho past through blackleg in stock, I would recommend those interested to have their stock inoculated by the stock inspectors. Tbis would bo a judicious start for the coming dairying season, aud T noticed Mr Leathern adopting rhis wise course n few days back. Several of our new settlers have arrived hero at.d an- m w permanently located here, viz Mr E W. Comes from Tttn.L . Mr McKay [ fr »va Waihmi Mr Tyrreli Pukekoh- and Mr Stubb> Waitura.!.

T have, to record the death of one of our most esteemed residents and one of the now fast disappearing band of Ganges settlers, in fche person of Mr Jam.'.- Browclee. who passed away suddenly u\ his late residence here ou Saturday at the age of 62 years. The cause of death was hoan failure. The defeased gentleman arrived iu this colony in '63 and was an ardent churchman aud lay reader in the Presbyterian Church. For many years he was commissioner for the local school district. The defeased is survived by his widow aud a grownup family to whom the sympathy of ill will be extended in their sad and sudden bereavement.
