Are the Rates Increased?
To the Editor,
Sin,—As throe of the gentlemen in the audienco at the public meeting last evening did mo the honour of querying the figures I supplied regarding rates, etc., I have taken the trouble to verify them and find that in ovory instance they were absolutely corroct without, of course, going into tine fractions, and I challenge anyone to provo the contrary. The present valuation of the whole borough is £351,379, which at j'd in the £ equals £IO9B Is 6d. The poitiou of the road district absorbed by the borough was valued at £120,535, rated at Id in the £, which realised £502 4s Od. The Town Board portion was valued at £79,32o,rated at Hd roalised£49s 15s, total £997 19s 6d. Net increase in general rate over the wholo borough, £IOO 2s Od, which proves conclusively that the present Council has not materially increased the rates. The gentleman who supplied tho meeting with an elaborate array of figures to prove that we had iucroasod his rates enormously, paid in rates last year £9 4s lid; this year ho is asked to pay £9 14s 4d—the ruinous increaso of 9s sd. I have taken no account of the old Town Board loan rates raised some 18 months or two years ago, with which we had nothing to do. I will attond at Council Chambers on Friday next betweou tho hours of 1 aud 4 to explain loan proposals or any other matters affecting tho Borough.—l am, etc., William Dvnx.
