AT THE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Another Short Meeting. Pukekohe Borough Council has still a long way to travel before its civic affairs are in order, but just at present (until the loan proposals are disposed of) members to some extent are marking time. On Wednesday evening only routine business was taken. Present: The Mayor (Mr Dunn), Crs. Berriman, Oornrie, Johns, Hamilton, Lawrie and Pollock.
The foreman presented a rough plan of roadwork which the Mayor thought was an improvement on J. Routly's scheme for grading Adams' hill. After an inspection of both plans that of the foreman was adopted. On the motion of Crs. Comrie and Lawrie it was decided to do the work by day labour. Authority to employ men was left with the foreman, councillors remarking that they did not want to be subjected to applications for jobs. Several aspects of the water scheme were discusssed.
Referring to the Council's application for one of the railway leases in King-street the Mayor said he had ascertained that Mr Goodwin had these sections leased for fourteen years, of which there were still six or seven years to run. Under the circumstances he thought the Council should proceed no further. The matter is accordingly to be held in abeyance. A letter from Hon. Mr Herries suggested that there is not much prospect of having the new.station building any nearer to the town than the site of the present clearing. R. H. McGougli complained of a Maori camp near his place. After discussion it was decidod to serve a notice to the Maoris to shift, their present quarters being a public road. Correspondence and other detail work was dealt with.
