HARRIS STREET.

SHALL IT BE METALLED?

A. proposal to metal at a cost of £IOOO was the subject of some discussion at the Council meeting on Wednesday night. Cr Pollock moved that £IOOO be placed on the loan estimates for metalling Harris-street. Cr Bilkey, in seconding the motion, pointed out it was the short cut for the Hill, Puni, and Waiuku people to the railway station. By metalling it they would divert traffic from the main street and reduce the maintenance charge*. Cr Hamilton suggested taking the t ] loan in three sections: (1) To include • King-street and the Boad from the Horse Bazaar to the Hotel corner; (2) Harris-street; (3) the other roads. Cr Pollock objected to having the roads divided. The Mayor said he was going to* Oppose Harris-street in and outside the Council. His reasons were that it was only a connecting link. For 7 months of the year it could be used without being metalled. There were many other streets which had just as good a claim to be considered a " short ' : cut." He was not going to treat anyone section better than another. . J; Cr Pollock failed to see how it would be made for any one section of the people. The Mayor: I mean for people f| who have other roads Cr Bilkey: Do you think it wise to | make people come round the longer way? 4 The Mayor: That is not the point. \'% They have their road. He had no, % objection if they wished to improve Vyl the road to specially rate themselves. ;iy Cr Bilkey pointed out they proposed p spending money on the Factory road. || The Mayor : Yes, and we propose |j spending £SOO on the road the Hill |j people use. The motion was lost by five to four. J, For, Crs Pollock, Bilkey, Hamilton, -1 and Berrimau. Against, Crs Johns Comrie, Lawrie, Hart, and the Mayor, After the resolution was lost it was hi decided to increase the allocation of- 'jJ the Town Board (£300) to £6OO.
