Weekly Meeting.

There were present at the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night the Mayor (Mr W. Dunn), Crs. R. Bilkey, A. Berriman, C. K. Lawrie, J. Pollock. J.W. Johns, DR. Hamilton and J. A. Comrie

Encroachment ox Hall Street. The Mayor reported that Cr Lawrie and himself had mot Mr Mason, of the Postal Department, rcfiii-ding the encroachment of the outbuildings at the Post office in Hall Stieetand the telephone poles blocking water channels. After discussion it bad been proposed that the Department remove the fence on Hall Street but that the building be allowed to remain, the Department admitting the Council's right of ownership. In regard to the telephone poles it agreed they remain until such times as the Council were goiDg to concrete or alter the water tables.—The action of the committee was continued. Notice of Motion.

Cr. Crenirie moved his motion (of which notice had been given) to rescind the resolution re the appointment of a water works engineer Cr. Johns seconded the resolution pro forma.—Cr. Bilkey supported the motion.—Cm. Johns, Lawrie, Hamilton, Pollock and the Mayor spoke against it. —The motion was lost, only Cr. Comrie votii.g for it and Cr. Bilkey abstaining from voting

Application fivni Mr J. Hewlett for a crossing i'i Victoria load was granted provided the applicant paid for it. The Mayor said he v.;is glad this cauio up. The Council had to come to a decision, as if they made one crossing they would have to put them into everybody's plac=». He advocated taking up the attitude that in all applications of this nature the Council should do the work at the applicant's expense.

ANOTHER LtABtMTY

The Wanganui Spiral Pipe Company wrote addressing their letter to to the Town Board, as follows : '' Is it possible for us to get a reply from you to the various communications we have sent in connection with progress payments We an; aware that there has been a change in the personnel of the Clerk of the Town Board, hem o our writing again now in the hopo that some reply may now be given us. We would bo extremely obliged for a progress payment. Our contract is practically complotod ;and that it is not is no fault of ours) and [practically the whole amount has been hie for some time.''

The Mayor said as far as the Council was concerned only one letter had been received. The Council had been told that money was not wanted and that an arrangement had been made with the Town Board to allow £2,000 to stand over. They all knew this was illegal. He could not say if the firm were entitled to a progress payment. —It was resolved to inform the Company that the Council's engineer wa« away but on his return the matter would be put before him and a reply sent. Time Sheets. Cr. Hamilton reported on behalf of tho Committee that the time sheets were in order except that thro? were missing. Expenditure was in some cases charged incorrectly against loan money. The Mayor: What accounts were they charged to ?

Cr. Hamilton : I don't know

The Mayor: It seems to me we are- in such ii position that we've got to llouuder round and get out sotiohow. We will have to pay them out of the general account until further de-tails an- procured.

Applications

Tlu. Council went into Committee to consider tho applications for the position of Borough Foreman. Tho number was reduced to three who are to be asked to attend the Couucil on Wednesday •

Consideration of the applications fur the position of water works engineer was held over till uext meeting.
