WAIKATO RIVER DRAINAGE.

MEETING AT THE AKA AKA.

(Faosi an Aka Akv Correspondent.) Enough has already appeared in these columns to convince constant readers of the Trass that the inhabitants of the Aka Aka and Otaua districts are not by any means in love with the proposed* works of the Waikato River Board, or convinced that no injury will result to their drainage through the prosecution of these works. The recent visit of the consulting engineer, which was intended to conciliate, appears only to have hardened up opposition to tho scheme, and the admissions he made in replying to questions have intensified the fear that the groynes across the opening of the Aka Aka channel will materially- injure it as the outfall of their, drams.

The result was that last Thursday afternoon a well attended meeting of settlers was held in the Aka Aka .Hall, Mr rjull, Chairman of the Aka Aka Drainage Board, presiding. The whole of the matters at issue between the River Board and the settlers were gone into most thoroughly and it was unanimously resolved that no pains should be spared to secure justice and safety for the district. To provide the required expert assistance a voluntary levy of fourpence to the acre was imposed on all hands within the area, and a committee consisting of Messrs Hull, Harris, Crosbie, Crawford and Higginson were elected to collect and administer the fund. The local bill the River Board is seeking to get through Parliament was read and discussed, and it was resolved to oppose its passage unless it was amended to secure the exclusion of the Aka Aka from the rating area, and to provide that no injury shall be done to the Aka Aka channel Messr Hull and Wily were elected as managers of this part of the businejp, with instructions to proceed to W&ington if they found it necessary.
