TRANSPORT USERS’ COMMITTEES

During a discussion on transport at the last meeting of Federated Farmers emphasis was laid on the desirability of all provinces forming users’ committees for the co-ordin-ation of the various interests affected by transport rates and conditions, since this would permit an organised approach to carriers’ associations in the event of any discussions on rates and terms of cartage and would offer solid resistance to any application by transport operators which would result in more invidious conditions for users. Where provinces have already taken this step, it has been found advisable to associate with county councils, dairy companies, and in provinces, the boundaries of which include urban areas, chambers of commerce. This serves to spread the cost of any legal expenses and also to embrace a good cross-sec-tion of users of transport, which carries greater weight when appearances are made before administrative charges and licensing authorities.

It would be of general assistance to head office to know what action provinces have already taken on these lines,, since experience gained in one area may be of value to others, and provinces are accordingly asked to supply, from time to time, information as to any negotiations in respect of terms and conditions for transport made with carrying organisations, and reports on the activities of their users’ committee generally.

All members should be aware of the value and importance of maintaining an alert interest in #transport matters; a committee of farmers who have especially interested themselves in the economies or transport, associated with representatives of county councils and dairy companies will constitute a substantial front to present on behalf of users in any negotiations with transport operators. It may be mentioned that the importance of users’ committees is as great, if not greater, in provinces where there is" no specified rate schedule in force.
