ANZAC DAY

SOLEMN OBSERVANCE AT PUTARURU

On the afternoon of Anzac Day residents of Putaruru attended a simple but impressive service in the Civic Hall and joined with people throughout the Dominion in paying tribute to the fallen of two world wars.

The service was preceded by a parade of returned servicemen, members of the women’s section of the R.S.A., the St. John Ambulance Brigade and Nursing Division, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides and army cadets, who assembled at the post office and marched past the Cenotaph, through the town to the hall. The Rev. F. O. Dawson, vicar of Putaruru, gave the address, and Cr. C. V. Pearce presided. Others on the platform were Mr P. D. Morrison, president of the Returned Services’ Association, Rev. R. F. Kenward, Rev. E. W. Grigg and Brigadier A. Shrive. At the close of the service the parade passed again through the town to the Cenotaph, and through the quiet of this sunny autumn day the Last Post and Reveille sounded and wreaths wex-e reverently placed at the foot of the memorialA fuller report of the ceremony will appear in the next issue of the Press.
