WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
ARAPCNI BRANCH There was a large attendance of members and visitox-s at the monthly meeting of the Arapuni Women’s Institute held in the Workers’ Hall. Mrs Long presided. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Brooker who has been president for the past four years. Miss Janet Brooker rendered two enjoyable solos, the accompanist being Mrs C. Salt. Mrs W. Sewell gave a demonstration with pine needles, and Mrs L. Brooker demonstrated the making of necklaces from plastic string. The roll call, “hints for gardening,” brought forth some very useful suggestions. Quite a good amount was realised at the sales table. Invitations to Mangakino, Tokoroa, Broadlands and Arohena birthdays were received. Competitions resulted as follows: floral s ( houlder spray, Mrs W. Sewell 1, Mrs J. Williams 2; thrift article, Miss Janet Bropker 1, Mrs J. Birse 2; best bloom,’ Mrs Dunstan and Mrs W. Worrall equal 1; best vegetable, Mrs J. Williams and Mrs M. Deed equal 1; competition in room, Mrs J. Williams; wandering article, Mrs A. Vette. Afternoon tea served by the hostesses, Mlesdames Wilkinson, Heappey and Sewell, brought a very happy afternoon to a close. tohoroa Meeting The Tokoroa Women’s Institute celebrated its second birthday this month, Mrs E. W. Noble presiding over a large attendance. The president welcomed visitors and. members and wished all an enjoyable afternoon. The aspirations were read and the institute song was sung. The programme opened with a competition, “names of songs,” the winner being Mrs Williams, of Arapuni. An amusing sketch followed, entitled “Give Anything,” those taking part being Mrs S. Shoemark, as mother, Mrs L. Marwood, as Jane, Mrs P. Munroe, as Peggy, Mrs D. Blain, as Nora, and Mrs P. Thompson, as Kathleen. Mrs Bridgeman sang two delightful songs, “Far Away Places” and “For Ever and Ever.” Two pianoforte solos, "Arabesque,” by Schuman, and the first movement of Mozart’s “Sonata in C . Major,” played by Mrs E. Petherick, were much enjoyed. A humorous sketch, “Cure for Deafness,” caused much amusement. The cast was: Mr Parker, Miss L. Williamson; Mrs Parker - , Mrs D. K. Thorburn; Mr Barker, Mrs C. Noble; Mrs Narker, Mrs F. M. Gillies. Mrs E. Hayward delighted her audience with two solos, “On Wings of Song” and “A Little Bit of Heaven.” , Mrs E. W. Noble presented gifts and sprays to Mesdames F. M. Gillies, D. K. Thorburn, F. Anderson and C. Lowe; also sprays to Mesdames S. Shoemark and J. J. Coombes. She also presented the points prizes for competitions held during the year, Mrs H. Boone being the winner of single bloom, truss and vegetable competitions ; she also won the Joan Hamilton Cup. Mrs C. Lowe was the winner of the shrub points, Mrs J. J. Coombes cooking, and Mrs S. Shoemark handwork and needlework. Mrs F. M. Gillies presented the new president, Mrs E. W. Noble, and secretary, Miss L. Williamson, with charming sprays, and “wished them success in the coming year. The birthday cake, made by Mrs W. Vincent, and iced by Mrs C. Noble, looked very pretty, its two candles being lit by Mrs F. M. Gillies, and extinguished by Mrs D. K. Thorburn. Mrs J. D. A. Cox then cut the cake, which was later handed round.
The winner of the lucky number for the afternoon was Mrs C. Nicholas. A charming sheaf and spray were presented to Mrs E. W. Noble by Arapuni and Mangakino institutes. Apologies were received from Mrs C. Lowe and Mrs H. Boone. Competition winners for the month were: single bloom, Mrs W. Hunt 1, Mrs J. Mossop 2; truss, Mrs F. M. Gillies 1, Mrs L. Newell 2; shrub, Mrs J. Hamilton 1, Mrs J. Mossop 2; vegetable, Mrs W. Hunt 1, Mrs J. Hamilton 2. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the committee, as hostesses.
