ATHLETICS

PBTAEURB CLUB Both the gallery of spectators and attendance of athletes were small at the Putaruru club’s evening meeting held at Glenshea Park on Thursday. Competition was nevertheless keen, with several visiting athletes adding to the interest. Good handicapping by Mr T. H. Sissons resulted in a photo finish in the senior 100 yards when Russell Lochhead, Roy and Frank McCurran flashed across the line together. The decision was given in that order. The open 440 yards gave Roy Bergquist an easy victory, as after taking the lead with a third of the distance covered he was not challenged. M. Harris, another Matamata runner with a very even stride, finished second, while John Morris, in a great battle, shaded Trevor McCurran for third. Murray Burwell won the junior broad jump and later jumped 20 feet 3 inches, a remarkable , effort for. an untrained athlete. In the junior 100 yards Jim Harvey led throughout, withstanding a challenge by Burwell, who ranged up alongside turning into the straight, only to weaken some distance from the tape. The other runners, Burwell and Harris, were quite content to run in behind, making it a good training run. Jack Luscombe, transferred from Waipukurau, won the senior high jump ard scored a runaway win in the 220 yards. Shirley Brown took another double, the ladies’ 75 and 100 yards. Mi T.
