RED CROSS APPRECIATED
PARCELS TO ENGLAND Recent Replies Recent replies from two of the recipients of food parcels despatched by the Putaruru Red Cross .Society give an indication of the importance and need there still is for such gestures. One from St. Paul’s Nursery in the East End of London acknowledged receipt of four parcels, the contents of which, fat, honey, jellies and nursery sweets, were stated to be a source of pleasure for the children and lonely aged poor who are assisted also. The letter continued to thank the society, saying: ’’One loving heart sets another on fire, making the world a .much happier place.” Christmas greetings and gratitude were expressed. Another reply from Mrs A. C. Mussell, 130 Guildford Road, Fratton, Portsmouth, referred to her health which had not been the best, forcing her to move into a prefabricated house to avoid climbing stairs. The lady, who is quite elderly, then went on to mention her Red Cross duties which involved the - staffing of outdoor huts during the summer, which she said was really marvellous, and the running of an "Over 70’s Club.” This latter is called the good companions’ club and provides a “nice tea every Wednesday with a pleasant afternoon’s entertainment.” One old member, a lady of 93, was referred to as being very nimble, and the writer, who sounds an active person, said two coach outings were held during the summer. Much pleasure was gain--ed from the enjoyment given the old people. The club, of which the writer was one of the founders, “brings a little, pleasure for at least a few hours'' a week to these grand old folk,” who for the most part lived in alone. One man of 76 was praised for his ability to draw his own patterns and knit fair isle garments. ' Others made toys, holding a bazaar at Christmas when they had no trouble': of disposing of their work. In conclusion, she wished the Putaruru society season’s’ greetings after once again thanking it for its kindness ifi sending her parcels. / ,
