BRITISH SEED EXPERT Comments On Putaruru Mr Pasemore of Devonshire, England, chairman of the seed committee of the British National Farmers’ Union, who left England by air on Wednesday last, was met in Putaruru on Monday afternoon by Mr J. J. Shine who, with the assistance of Mr L. A. Newell, entertained him during the few hours of his visit. Here to investigate New Zealand seeds and their potential supply, Mr Pasemore expressed a desire to see as much as possible of New Zealand grasslands during his visit to the Dominion. He intends spending at least three months on his investigations made possible by a Nuffield grant. A comparison of New Zealand and English prices was made by the visitor who was most interested in the Putaruru sale. Lamb was sold here at 38-441 b, whereas in England farmers sought to sell at 901 b. New Zealand lambs sold on the hoof at Home, he said, would bring about £5. < In England, heavy store cattle would buy at approximately £6O. Utter amazement at this country’s stock carrying capacity was • expressed. Mr Pasemore’s vigit was brief, but he stated he would return later when conducting his detailed field work. Accompanying Mr Pasemore was Mr O’Shea, Dominion secretary of Federated Farmers. After several interesting "and instructive hours in Putaruru district both gentlemen proceeded to Rotorua.
