ADDRESS ON FARMING PROBLEMS
ROTARY CLUB MEETING At the weekly meeting of the Putaruru Rotary Club on Wednesday an address was given by Mr J. J. Shine, president Putaruru subprovince of Federated Farmers, on some of the problems of the farmer to- day. He spoke of the rural-urban relations as being not a question of personal rivalry but more a conflict of interests. He was also of the opinion that there is an unnatural drift from the country to city, gradually denuding the farms of manpower. The increasing demand by secondary industries for imported plant at the expense of the farmer’s growing need for mere agricultural machinery was another problem which would require readjustment. Existing grasslands within a few years .pould be made to increase production by £SO million annually. Guests at the meeting were farmers from the district and included Messrs E. D. White (chairman of the Matamata County Council) and J. Duxfield (president of the Putaruru A. and P. Association), who briefly thanked the club on behalf of the farming community for the invitation to be present. The meet- ‘ T concluded with a hearty vote of t hanks to Mr Shine for his address.
