SCHOOL NEWS

FOOTBALL On Thursday, July 17, the first fifteen played its second interschool match of the season against Cambridge District High School first fifteen, at Cambridge. The teams lined out as follows: Cambridge: Munco, Woods, Dahiburg (captain), Heaslip, Whaiapu, La Probe, Kermode, Oleland, Riley, Clark, Cave, Reynolds, Begg, May, Breen. Putaruru: Humphrey, McAlister, Barnett, Smith, Wiringi, Ngatai, Jackson, Maxwell, Bergquist, Webby, W. Tomalin, Te Tomo,’ Wellfare, Howland (captain), D. Tomalin. Cambridge kicked off into a light breeze with a light drizzle falling. Putaruru forwards went to the attack with good combined rushes, but their backs were unable to handle and some good chances were lost. Cambridge also made the error of trying to handle and. were rather lucky to keep out of trouble. However, their forwards fought their way upfield and finally the whole back line handled for Woods to brush past his marker and score. Dahlberg converted with a fine kick. Putaruru came back and pressed hard but could not finalise their attack, and half-time came with no further score. The rain had ceased, and in the second spell, with a fairly dry ball, Cambridge soon showed their superiority. Woods came very close to scoring, but Humphreys forced him out with a glorious tackle, but from the lineout, Breen plunged over to score. The kick failed. Cambridge 8, Putaruru 0. Cambridge backs threw the ball around in great style, and only solid tackling kept them out, but the Cambridge first five-eighth, La Trobe, made a brilliant run to score near the posts. The kick" again failed. 'Cambridge 11, Putaruru 0. The wind had strengthened and Putaruru could not get to the attack and Dahlberg kicked a penalty goal. Cambridge 14—0.

It \yas now all Cambridge and three more tries were added, one being converted. The final score was Cambridge 25, Putaruru 0. The Putaruru forwards played a very sound game against a more experienced' pack, but the backs were not a happy combination, being caught flat-footed too- often. 'Humphrey •• played < very soundly at fullback, tackling and fielding well. As intcr-school football should be, the game was fast,, hard and clean. The team was most hospitably entertained and the visit thoroughly enjoyed. Basketball Three basketball teams played against Cambridge last Thursday, and were met by a welcoming committee of pupils and staff at the school gates. -The first match between the two C teams was marred by heavy rain. The result was a win for Cambridge by 11 goals to 3. The next match, between the B teams, was very keenly fought, and the scoro of 12 goals to four in favour of Cambridge was not a true indication of the run of play. The final game, between the two A teams, resulted in a win for Cambridge by 22 goals to 13, after a very close first spell when the score was B—6. The whole day showed clearly the lack of combination and practice by the Putaruru teams necessary for successful match play. Players were entertained at afternoon tea and this concluded a most enjoyable visit. Mangakino Trip Two bus loads of basketball and football players made tho trip to Mangakino last Thursday. The results were as follows: Basketball: Mangakino defeated Intermediate B by three goals to two, and were also successful in winning the match against Intermediate C by eight goals to three. Football ; Mangakino defeated a light High School fifteen by 12—3, and in the match played by the midgets there was no score. The visitors were entertained in the Y.M.C.A., and this made a happy conclusion to the first visit to Mangakino. Tirau Matches To complete a real sports day the Intermediate A basketball team visited Tirau where two matches were played, the first resulting in a win for Tirau iby 9 —<6 and the second in a draw, 4— i. In the boys’ football match Tirau defeated Intermediate A team by 25 points to three. Prior to their return; the Putaruru pupils were entertained to a most enjoyable afternoon tea.
