JERSEY BREEDERS’ GROUP
PUTARURU ANNUAL MEETING Tho 14th annual meeting of the Putaruru District Jersey Breeders’ Croup was held in Putarumi recently, when 22 memibors met to discuss the group’s activities and the need to create a deeper interest in the Jersey breed, and to further even moro the hold which the breed has Sn this district. An apology was received from Mr. S. G. Barnett, who through illuiess was unable to be present. Mr. J. A. Ranger occupied the -chair, and welcomed four new members. The chairman gave a comprehensive report covering the history of the group since its inception. When first formed there were only seven members, and now the mumlber had grown to 28. The report was well received. Election of Officers 'The election of officers resulted:— .president, Mr. G. Ireland; vice-pre-sidents, Messrs. M. Peffers and Amoore; secretary and treasurer, Mr. N. Ward; executive committee, Messrs. Ireland, Peffers, Ranger and Ward; sales manager, Mr. Peffers. Heifer Sale A general discussion covering the possibilities of holding a separate heifer sale in the autumn was held, but the meeting did not approve of the suggestion. Many of the mem. bers were young breeders, and did mot wish to dispose of their younger cattle, because the establishment of a stud required the best that one could breed. As such a sale would require approximately 50 one-year and two-year heifers, it would be doubtful if a sufficient number of suitable type could be catalogued. To maintain the high standard set by the breeders at previous sales, Mr, Ranger moved that the group accept up to 2=5 heifers for the forthcoming sale. The motion was seconded and carried. Annual Sale The secretary reported that with a total ' of approximately 55 bulls, the catalogue would go to print at ■►'the end of July. The layout and design “fob the catalogue is to again be ' left in the capable hands of Mr. Peffers. The previous issues handled by him have all been a success. It was decided that all. animals entered l will have to pass a rigid inspection for type, condition, and development by a judge of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Association. A show is to be held preceding the sale, and there will be classes' for all ' animals entered. Mr. Ward 1 was appointed tattoo inspector to ensure the purchasers that their cattle have been tattooed correctly. "An important factor regarding one of the conditions of the sale is a new guarantee for the sale of bulls, which will safeguard the vendor and purchaser alike. Mr. Ranger mentioned the danger risked in the handling of bulls, particularly by the tattoo inspector, and moved that the group take out an accident insurance policy for the day to cover all those employed in case of accidents. Mr. P. L. Thompson seconded the motion, which was carried. Field Day The Chairman remarked on the success of the field day held last year at Mr. J. Osborne’s farm. Mr. G. H. Bell, of the Pinewoods Stud, Oakura, has given an excellent lecture on the points of a Jersey cow and bull. The attendance on the day had 'been very good, many of the boys from the Putaruru and secondary schools being present. The chairman expressed the group’s ■appreciation to Mr. Osborne for the use of his farm and cattle. It was proposed to hold another field day later on in the spring. The arrangements have been left to the executive committee to finalise. Thanks At the conclusion of the busi less a vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. J. A. Ranger, who hag been the group’s hostess at all the meeting; since its inception, and who has provided supper at all these meetings. The past president was also thanked for all that he had done for the progress of the group over the last five years. .
