SCHOOL NEWS
FOOTBALL MATCH School v. Athletic School played another wet-day game last Saturday, their opponent § this time being Athletic. The match was very evenly contested, and although School managed to reduce the margin of eight points by which they lost in the last encounter Athletic again came out the winners, the final scores being 5—3. Athletic’s points consisted of a try by Logan, which was converted by Bayley, while Bergqulst scored a try for School. Although the game opened with some very brisk play a steady drizzle which commenced about 10 minutes after the match began gradually slowed down the pace and made bright play impossible. The game then developed into a slogging match between two good packs of forwards, and although the backs endeavoured to open up play at every opportunity the game was essentially a forward struggle. The most noticeable improvement was in the play of the Athletic forwards and in that of the School hacks, both sides being much more balanced than on previous occasions. The School side, however, lacked just the necessary finish to their scoring movements which would have made for victory against their more-experi-enced opponents. Once again Athletic are to be congratulated on their creditable win. The game was played in the usual fine spirit and was ably controlled by Mr. Thompson. Other Activities On Saturday, only basketball games in the B grade were played, as two representative teams travelled to Cambridge. Results of school games were: School C 0, Intermediate A 3; Intermediate A 5, Putaruru Blue 3; Intermediate B 4, Mangakiuo 4. The Mangakiuo girls showed good sportsmanship h.v paying their own fares to travel to Putaruru just# to play a friendly game. The school players to travel to Cambridge with the representative teams were: N. Murray, E. Savage, I. Maxwell, O. Ericson, M. Sissons. To-day, Thursday, when the first fifteen and three basketball teams travel to Cambridge, two football and the B and C intermediate basketball teams will journey to Mangakino. Also, the Intermediate A basketball team and the Intermediate football fifteen will go to Tirau oil the same day. Miss Thompson and Mr. Shields, physical education specialists, spent Tuesday at the school assisting in the intermediate and secondary departments.
