MAJOR WORLD ISSUES
MUST BE DISCUSSED Matamata County Council Decision Chairman Indites United States “ I think that America is taking up a very shortsighted attitude which in the end must bring about her own destruction if persisted in,” stated Cr. E. D. White, chairman of the Matamata County Council. when a circular letter was received suggesting that £50,000;000 of the Dominion’s sterling credits should be cancelled. Continuing, Cr. White said that at present they were fighting small issues and overlooking major problems. When such issues were tackled it was like a voice crying in the wilderness. The Clerk: To-day’s paper reveals the seriousness of the position. Cr. White agreed with this statement and made the comment which opens this article. It was a pity, he added, that the position was not taken lip more by the public and that people did not speak out more freely. Cr. J. E. Davidson heartily endorsed the comment made and asked if the council could not do anything. It was a big question, but it was one that should he discussed, lie did not think that it should be passed. Cr. G. H. Verity and other councillors agreed with the suggestion, and the chairman added that there was not time that day to deal with the matter, which was a big question. He intended to bring: the matter up again. Unless such problems were dealt with they would not be in a position to combat other doctrines and the Communistic element would get control. He intended that the matter should he brought up at a later meeting.
On the motion of Crs. Verity and Davidson it was decided to place the subject on the agenda for the next meeting and to obtain further copies of the circular.
