INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY PARTY

On Thursday of last week the 14th birthday party of the Lichfield Women’s Institute was celebrated n the Lichfield Hall. The hall had been gaily decorated with greenery and bright artificial flowers. Members and visitors entered a game of shaking hands with everyone, 13 baing the lucky number, six members receiving chocolate as prizes. .The .president, Mrs. J. D. Cox, welcomed the largo attendance of members and visitors, over 40 being present. Three members, Mrs. J. Burgess, Mrs. I. Kinloeh and Mrs A. Bernhard, received long service badgas. Each of these three members had served constantly over 10 years. Mrs. Cox, in speaking of th a presentation, remarked that such badgqa were not lightly given. A spot waltz was enjoyed, and a play, “On Institute Day,” presented by committee members, induced much laughter. Mrs. Palliser, of the Waikato East Federation, was introduced by the president. .She stated her pleasure at seeing so many present. Mrs. Palliser than presented the trophies won during the year, the winners being as follows: Points cup, plaque and trophy, Mrs. J. Gough, runnerup trophy, Mrs. R. Jamieson; Joan Hamilton Challenge Cup for most points in floral and vegetable competitions, Mrs. I. Rea; Webber trophy fer floral work, Mrs I, Rea 1, Mrs, Gough and Mrs. Addenlbrooke, equal, 2; garden circle prizes for vegetables, Mrs. Rea and Mrs. Burgess, equal, 1, Mrs. Addemtrooke 2; Mrs. Andersen’s special trophy for member who had received no trophy, and who had had the most entries over all competitions, was won by Mrs. Hill.

A musical stick game was than entered into with much glee. Mrs. Palliser was afterwards asked to light the candles on the: birthday cake, which had been .baked and Iced by Mrs. Jamieson. A delightful afternoon tea was served. The roll call was well answered, the>re being present members of the following .organisations: Waikato East Federation, Putaruru Women’s Institute f Arapuni Women’s Institute!, Tapapa Institute, Springdale Institute, Manawaru Institute, Arapuni League of Mothers, Tokoroa, Bakaipakura and Putaruru Women’s Divisions, and Raglan Women’s Institute.

Apologies were received from Te Aroha, Wardville, Taupo, Waipa and Turanga-o-moana Institutes and the Tirau Women’s Division.

In the evening an old-time dance, was held to round off the day, the hall being well filled. Mr. Benga’s orchestra kindly played for the institute, and this was much appreciated. Mr. Rea was a capable M.C., and Mr. Burgess kindly assisted at the door. A competition waltz was won by Miss Rutledge and Mr. J. Wooffendsn.

After supper a very happy day came to a close. MONTHLY DANCE The usual monthly dance was held in the Lichfield Hall .on Saturday evening and drew a big crowd. Good music was supplied by a visiting orchestra, and an extra fox-trot was splendidly played by Miss E. Mathis, of Springdale. A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. Les Ellis and partner. Mr. J. Hamilton was a capable M.C.'
