TIRAU SCOUTS
FOURTH ANNUAL MEETING Lady Scoutmaster Resigns Miss Helen Watkins, who has been in successful charge of the Tirau Scouts since 1943, tendered hcv resignation at the fourth annual meocing of that body. Reporting on the year, Miss Watkins stated that there were now 23 scouts cn tha roll, of which number 10 \va e seniors. Five of the boys had- been with the troop since its inception in April, 1943. During the period of four years 40 boys had passed through her hands on account of .passing the scout age. or leaving the district, several of the latter joining other troops. A successful street stall aui bottle drive was held early in the year and this effort, coupled with the fact that several scouts earned a number of pounds on their own initiative, realised a total of £lB. This sum enabled those scouts who attended- the summer camp at Tauranga to take their o.wn tcint.
During March a working bee was held at the den, which was painted under the direction of Mt. L. Watkins. There was no reason why the den could not be made into a comfortable room, with matting on the concrete floor and patrol corners showing handicraft and with cupboards and ether useful gadgets—a comfortabla place the scouts could call their own. A parade was held on Anzac Day, and although few meetings had been held the boys were, loyal and full of enthusiasm. Under a keen leader who would encourage them in tests and badge work, go camping with them, sharing their interests and problems, the group should hake great progress. In leaving them she wished to thang the boys, parents, commit-tee-men, badge examiners and all who had rendered help for their friendly co-operation, and to assure all of her best wishes and continued interest. Officers Elected The following officials were elected for the coming year: Chairman, Mr. S. W. Brownlie; secretary, Mr. K. Tyrrell; committee, Messrs. E. J. Coubrough, D. Allen, E. Young, L. Davidson, C. Chaytor, L. Watkins, H. G. Wine, W. H. G. Allen, K.' R. Lichfield, J. Sheerin, H. Darragh. In tendering thanks to Miss Watkins, the chairman spoke eulogistically of her work since the inception of the scouts, -paying a special tribute to her ability in organising the troop so efficiently. Mr. A. C. Cairns was elected as scoutmaster to fill the vacancy.
