Tokoroa were winning the ball from the scrums and linesout, but the fast breaking of Mangakino’s forwards upset the opposing five-eighths, with the result that the ball seldom reached Evans at centre. Athletic The meeting of these teams on Karl’s Paddock proved to be a strenuous but scrambly game, tha spoil* ing tactics of Tokoroa nullifying the efforts of the Athletic 'back line to score. Penalties were frequent, and Referee Power blew his whistle to good' effset. The game opened with Tokoroa on .attack and they kept Athletic on. the defensiva for a few minutes until Athla.ic forwards took play to Tokoroa line, where from a forward scramble Morris scored for Haworth to convert. Athletic 5, Tokoroa 0. Athletic continued to hold Tokoroa in their twanty-five and from a penalty Dunn narrowly failed to goal. Two penalties in quick succession brought relief to Tokoroa and they took play to Athletic territory where they ware awarded a penalty. The kick at goal dropped short, and in attempting to field the ball Graham knocked-on in front of the posts. From the resultant scrum the Athletic forwards took charge and carried - the 'ball tbGdie other end of the field, where Dunn had andther attempt to goal for Athletic. Than Tokoroa had a run and gained a lot of ground, but faulty passing spoiled a good movement, . and play was soon returned to midfield, the forwards on both sides playing strenuous foci.ball. Athletic backs got moving and a good l piece of work broke down when the hall was overrun in Tokoroa’s twenty-five. Haworth had an unsuccessful attempt to goal, and from ■the drop-out Athletic backs were on the move again and were nearly over vtdien Hodson. (fullback) came in as extra man. However, Athletic were penalised and Tokoroa took advantage of the kick and quickly had Athletic on defence, and continued to press for some minutes. From a scrum infringement directly in front of the pedts Tokcroa made no mistake with the kick, making the halftime score: Athletic 5, Tokoroa 3. On resumption, Tokoroa at once attacked and as at the beginning of the first spell gave Athletic a lively time for a few minutes, until Athletic forwards took play to near Tokoroa line, and when a try seemed certain Haworth kicked too hard, a drop-out resulting. Athletic continued to press and Dunn missed another kick from a scrum infringemet by Tokoroa. The Athletic forwards started their backs away, and again a try looked imminent, but faulty handling and the bustling tactics of Tokoroa spoilt the movement.

Both sets of forwards were tiring and it was noticeable at this stage (particularly with the Athletic team) that there were not so many heads down in fhs rucks, and it was this fact, together with the bad positional play of Hodson at fullback which allowed the Takoroa forwards to control the play for some while.

Play continued to travel up and down field, Athletics’ attempts to opan up play always breaking down. Then Woodgate and Morris were associated in a great run up the sideline for Athletic and were stopped right on the line. A scrum on Tokoroa’s line saw Athletic forwards push the scrum over the line for Paxton to fall on the ball to score. The kick was not successful. Athletic 8, Tokoroa 3.

In the last few minutos Athletic were definitely on top and gave Tokoroa no respite, and though they tried desperately to score Tokoroa defence held, and so the game ended, with Tokoroa desperately defending.
