Residential qualifications have recently been the basis of discussions by rugby unions as well as in the Electoral Court. Reference •to this fact was made by the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O’Leary, in the Electoral Court last week, when he mentioned that the Auckland Rugby Union had granted permission. to a prominent piayer, J. li. Sherratt, to play for one of the Auckland clubs although he was resident in the city only at week-ends. The union held that his domicile in the South Auckland area was only transitory. “ It is rather curious that this should arise at the present time,” said Sir Humphrey. “ I wonder if they have been reading my learned friend’s addresses,” said Mr. W. J. Sim, K.C., counsel for petitioner, referring to submissions made by counsel for respondent, Mr.. T. P. Cleary.
