MODEL VILLAGE

STRATHMORE BLOCK Settling Former Servicemen A definite statement that the model village to be laid out to cater for the Strathmore and other blocks upon which ex-servicemen are to be settled on the'land would not be at Reporoa, was given to a deputation from the Matamata RJ3.A. by the Hon. C. F. Skinner, Minister of Rehabilitation, The deputation advised the Minister that a map in its possession was, ringed! in Wellington showing Reporoa as the proposed site of the village. The association had been asked by the New Zealand R.S.A. executive committee to make an official report in the area in 1241, as ,?ome concern was felt as to the suitability of the area for soldier settlement. Since then five or six visits had been paid. The Reporoa site was considered a bad one, very hard to drain and possessing a clay sub-soil in the township area. The association held the area would in time be a wonderful settlement and it agreed with the Minister’s figures that there was room for 400 settlers on Strathmore and contiguous areas. A few miles further south there was an ideal site.

The Minister commented that he was surprised to hear that Reporoa was so marked He could assure the deputation that he was chairman of the board and knew nothing of it. He would give a definite assurance that whatever Site was . chosen it would not be Reporoa.
