RACING NOTES
MANAWATU MEETING i Except for the brilliant prospects ,of the Hazlett Southland stable for steeplechases ahead with Noko and Spendthrift, and the fairly easy win of Th e Dczer, last Saturday’s Manawatu meet ng did not give many pointers towards the coming Wellington meeting- Several prominent candidates for the latter, although accepted for, d]d not take, their 1 places in the fields. This particu- . larly applies to Chat, Flying Hawk, | Colibri,. Talenta, Whackie, Autolie, ■ and Theolateral. . All the. horses ! mentioned must be given good I chances in forthcoming engagements. • Noldo Makjes It Four Noko gave, -a splendid exhibition of jumping in the Manawatu Steeplechase of three miles to make his record: four steeplechase wins on end. His stablemate, Spendthrifht, which has had three on end, was not racing, so that it is possible that , the stable may rely upon the latter In the Wellington Steeplechase, re- I serving Noko for the National. If j they both start at Wellington they j should make a very hot'bracket. The Te Rapa-trained The Cardinal was I made a very warm favourite on Saturday, but he again slipped into an obstacle and went out of the race very early. The Mor rinsvi lie-owned Gar Vaals was tailed off As a steeplechase it was a poor contest, hut there is no doubt that Noko is a very fine horse. As he had not had a race for over, ■ a month, the fact that he was ridden out to beat tbe | maiden, KUe Hour, will not dampen enthusiasm. . Matamata Horses’ Failure For some unaccountable reason .there was a lot of money sent to •, last Saturday for the r tamata -trained Merry Vaals, and j«n|<■» Matamata-trained and MorrinsW\ ™sle-owned Heatherdine- Neither 'horse had any performance of note j and were in big fields so that it must have been the fact that they were sent down such a distance that encouraged backers. Neither horse was noticed in the running. , , Native ChSef Pulled tip One of the disappointments of the day was the full-brother to Kindergarten, Native Chief. After his good display at Te Rapa a few weeks ago he was expected to run prominently, but was pulled up in the race ' on Saturday when he had no chance# No explanation of this had showing has yet been publishedA Possibility A horse that is thought a lot of by those who have seen him is Red r Glare. He was a disappointment at the recent A.R.C. winter meeting, but was made favourite in the Hack Hurdles last Saturday- He galloped In a handy position behind the leader, Hunting Comet, for about 1J mile s of the 11 m'les journey, and then galloped on to take the lead entering the home stretch and win _ , easily from Poutu. Red Glare may S* l . go on to better things. A Golod Hojrse Gone The death has occurred e? the English-bred stallion Valkyrian, who had been located in South. Canterbury for several years past. He was ♦ foaled in 1917 and was imported to New Zealand by Dr. W. C- Ring, Auckland, in 1922. Valkyrian was by William the Third, the best staying son of St. Simon, from Valkyr, by Eager, son o'f Enthusiast, from St. Natalia, half-sister to the Oaks winner La Sagesse, by Common i from St. MaTy, by Hermit. Valkyrian sired many useful horses, both flat -performers and jumpers. Among them were Valpeen, winner of the Grand National Steeplechase twice, the Great Northern Steeplechase twice, and the Wellington Steeplechase; Slayer, Prince of Orange, Strip, Valarth, Val Watch, Lord Val; and good performers by him on the flat were Valkon, Lady Lulu, Sleeveless, Norseman, Shy, Princ e Val and Vali. Valkyrian’s most notable contribution to racing history should be ~Vala<iore, who is he dam of KinderLj§j.arten. Valkyrian did his best service at when in .charge of A. , McTv-thur, who also trained Valkon. The latter defeated the great Paganelli on his merits m a sprint at Te Rapa.
