LOCAL AND GENERAL

The annual Lichfield sports will be held next month. A good programme, which includes a number of horse events, has been drawn up.

Members of the Main Highways Board will be visiting the Matamata County district this month. At the monthly meeting of the County Council last Friday, a letter from the board was read inviting the council to confer with its representatives on •January 28 in Tirau.

Tractors travelling along county roads must not carry tyres which damage roads, That was what the Matamata County engineer stated in reply to an inquiry at the monthly meeting of the council. Tractor tyres, he said, must be fitted with special grips when travelling along roads.

A heavy volume of traffic passed through the Mamaku bush during the holiday period, according to the report of the Matamata County Council traffic inspector, presented at the January meeting of the council. The inspector noticed a marked improvement in the conduct of motorists throughout the holiday time.

Mr. E. F, Peacocke, farmer, of Hamilton, was nominated by the Matamata County Council at its January meeting to act as the representative of Waikato County Councils on a special advisory committee representing Waikato farming interests to the Ruakura State Farm. It was stated that Mr. Peacocke was a man of wide experience and would be well suited to act as a member of the committee.

Motorists ere usually chary about giving “ lifts ” to trampers to-day, but one young man who passed through Putaruru on Monday last found it easy to get the rides he wanted. He was equipped with a heavy tramper’s pack and had a pair of stout shoes on his feet, and he said he was tramping to Wellington. The time was about three o’clock in the afternoon and he had set out from Hamilton at noon that day. It was nothing to him.

An excellent recovery from his serious illness has been made by a young camper, Mr. F. J. A. Miller, of Wellington, who fell ill with heatstroke two weeks ago while travelling from Rotorua on a camping holiday with his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Miller, and cousin, Mr. K. Walsh. Mr. Miller, junr., who undoubtedly owes his recovery to the unceasing attention and care lavished on him not only by his parents, but by several Putaruru residents, is now convalescing- at the residence of Mr. R. W. Cook, where he has been for the past past two weeks.
