Golden Wedding MR. AND MRS. J. MATEER, SENR. A large circle of relatives and friends waited on Mr. and Mrs. J. Mateer, senr., on Tuesday evening to congratulate them on their golden wedding. Opportunity was also taken to congratulate Mr. Mateer on attaining his 77th birthday, which fell on the previous day. Mr. A. Mateer acted as M.C. for the evening, and a short toast list was honoured. During the evening, which was mostly spent in social chat, songs were given by the following: Mr. W.. G. John, Mr. W. Tanner, Mrs. G. May, Mr. and Mrs. May (duet) and Master T. May. More than a dozen congratulatory telegrams from relatives and friends were read during the evening, and two beautiful cakes were cut. Mrs. Mateer, senr., made the cakes, which were prettily iced by Mrs. G. May. Mr. rnd Mrs. Mateer, senr., were the recipients of many presents, including a cake from Mr. C. Gardiner. In proposing the toast of Mr. and Mrs. Mateer, Mr. J. Pohlen said that they had come to Matamata some 28 years ago and he had had the pleasure of knowing them over the whole of that period. He had found from practical experience, as others had, that they were a most kind-hearted couple who were generous to a fault. They had proved great neighbours, and had been found true and trusty over a period of time. That day they celebrated a double event, which was a privilege that few lived to enjoy. All through the years they had lived happily toget' er and had reared a family of nine, four boys and five girls, who were all doing well and were highly respected in the community'. There were four generations alive, which in itself was quite a feature, and he had much pleasure on behalf of those present in wishing both many more years of good health and happiness. Musical honours were accorded, and Mr. W. A. Gordon replied briefly on behalf of Mr. and Mrs. Mateer, taking the opportunity to speak in glowing terms of their good qualities as neighbours.
