MORRINSVILLE A. & P. SHOW

OFFICIAL OPENING Sir Stephen Allen’s Remarks The show was officially opened by Sir Stephen Allen, patron of the society, who spoke to the crowd through a microphone installed in the grandstand. The president (Mr. W. J. Aitken) briefly introduced Sir Stephen. “ I feel it is a great compliment to be asked to open this show,” said Sir Stephen, “ owing to the fact that ' it has been opened in past years by very distinguished persons. I suppose,” he added humorously, “ that the real reason why I have been asked to open the show is that you have all become so tired of listening to speeches that you have asked someone who cannot talk. For, after all, no one goes to a show to listen to speeches, but to look at the show. The main reason for holding shows is so that we may see the best stock in the district with a view to bringing our own up to that standard, and knowing from whom we can buy the best animals.” In another witty sally Sir Stephen added that he supposed the practice of farming, of growing stock, etc., was going out of fashion, and in a few years’ time we should find ourselves working under some new financial scheme, and would then drop farming and rob our neighbours instead.” (Laughter). “ This show deserves support from all farmers of the district,” added Sir Stephen. “ This is our own show, and it is up to us to make it the best in our district, especially when we recollect that within a 10mile radius of Morrinsville a census of stock would show a greater i amount of stock than within 10 miles of any other town in New Zealand. “ Finally, I would like to congratulate the president and committee on ! the very fine show which there is here to-day,” said Sir Stephen. “It | is disappointing, however, to see so [ few entries in the pig classes, bej cause that is rapidly becoming a very important branch of farming in ' this district. I hope there will be ! more in future. The members of the committee have worked hard to make the show a success. Its success is due almost entirely to theii ■ unselfish acts.” : Sir Stephen then formally de- ■ dared the show open.
