CHRISTMAS EVE FATALITY.

OVERTURNING OF CAI*K

On Matamata-Tirau Road. A verdict of death by misadventure was returned by the District Coroner, Mr. A. J. Tong, on Tuesday, after an enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death of Hazel Dorothy Tyrrell, aged 16years, daughter of Vincent Seymour Tyrrell, farmer, of Okoroire, who received fatal injuries in a motor collision on Christmas Eve. Deceased was one of a party of six in a motor car driven by Lawrence William Ganley, of Auckland,, which collided with a motor lorry driven by Maurice Edward Pullman,. . of Tirau, on the Matamata-Tirau road about 33 miles from Matamata.. Other members of the party in the motor car to receive injuries were the driver, Ganley, whose right arm ' had to be ‘amputated, and Miss Hancock, who was sent to hospital forminor injuries. There were eight witnesses at the adjourned inquiry, which was held'" in the Matamata Court. SeniorSergeant J. J. Power, of Hamilton, conducted the case on behalf of the police.

Dr. J. T. Laurenson gave evidence that Miss Tyrrell was dead when he arrived. The cause of death was laceration of the brain following fracture of the skull. There were two other injured people, and one, Miss Hancock, was sent to hospital. The driver of the car, Mr. Ganley, was also sent to hospital. There was no smell or suggestion of liquor.

The coroner returned a verdict that: deceased died as a result of injuries, received in a motor collision caused, by misadventure.
