Speaking of prospects in a live stock authority writes to a friend in New Plymouth: “ Fortunately the mild season was good forearly lambs. But naturally the butchers struck at the height of the season for more wages or rates. Considering the wage was something like £l2 a week there was no excuse. Theassistant Government meat inspectors—all skilled butchers who have passed a stiff examination—get £s' per week, while the boys who wipedown the lamb carcases get £6 ss. Can anything more absurd be imagined?”
