ALLUVIAL DIAMONDS.
STABILISING THE MARKET. An Official Statement* The following official statement has been issued at Pretoria:— "Official figures show- that the output of alluvial diamonds in the Lichtenburg district is on the wane, and it is not thought that the recent proclamation of portions of the farm of Weiverdiend will lead to any increase of the output in these fields. The falling off in production from other proclaimed fields will probably be greater than any likely output from the new Welverdicnd diggings. The Government is not indifferent to the danger which the uncontrolled production of alluvial diamonds represents to the diamond trade, and it is hoped that by the time any further ground is required for proclamation the Diamond Bill will have been passed, enabling the Government to control the situation more effectively."
