"NEW ZEALAND" CREAM.
r.IABE IN ENGLAND. “ Atrocious Stuff.” Mr. C. L. Stevenson, electricaL engineer, of Dunedin, who is at present .he guest of his sister and brother-in-law, Mrs. and the Rev. A. C. Hampton, of the Manse, Matamata, ;ells. of interesting experiences he had when trying to buy New Zealand dairy produce in England. He states that, seeing in a shop window little jars labelled “ New Zealand cream ” he purchased one. On sampling the contents, however, he found it “ atrocious stuff.” He took it back to the grocer and said: “ Look here, this is not New Zealand cream, which I am too familiar with to be deceived in this fashion.” The storekeeper calmly admitted that the concoction was made in England, and that.” New Zealand ” was mere a trade name. This grocer did not see any commercial wrong in the misleading use of the name, and said the practice was a long-established cusom. Similarly, Mr. Stevenson said he found that “ Empire ” butter was a mixture in -which the good New Zealand product was used to blend with very inferior butter from other parts. Under the conditions existing, New Zealand was not getting the benefit of the high quality insisted upon by the graders for butter for export.
