NGATIRA.
NATIVE DANCE HALL. A very successful dance was held at Ngatira on Saturday • night, the 12th inst., organised by the Amopiu family, and under the supervision of Mr. C. Thompson. The object of the dance was to raise funds in aid of a gigantic gathering which is to be held at Easter on the occasion of the official opening ceremony of the new Maori meeting house, when chiefs are expected from various parts, and many ancestral rites are to be performed. During Saturday’s dance the Monte Carlo waltz competition created great interest, and was won by Miss M. Bluegum and Mr. J. Randall, of South Taranaki, Te Whetu. This is the second occasion on which this prize has gone to Te Whetu, the' previous winners being Mrs. Martin and Mr. L. Jensen. The attendance v’as a large one, there being visitors from Selwyn, Te Whetu, Putaruru and Mainaltu, and keen pleasure was expressed at the excellence of the floor of the new dancing hall. The music was supplied by the Ahuru orchestra, and dancing was kept up till midnight, when the management closed the evening. On behalf of the settlement, Rore Amopiu welcomed the visitors in a few we!l-chos"n words, and stated the object of the social. An endeavour is being made to se- ! cure the attendance of Ministers of J the Crown at the settlement in April j next.
