FOOTBALL. .... 1

ARAPUNI 8, TE WHETU 3. j Before a good crowd of spectators 1 in ideal playing- conditions, the meet- | ing of the above teams produced a game which kept the onlookers at a j high pi tell of excitement throughout! the game. Up till three-quarter time £here was little difference between the sides, but in the last spell the green and whites played with great dash and completely outplayed their opponents. The first item of note was a nicelytaken mark by Campion, after which Te Whetu set up a hot attack. Pethorick relieved with a solo dribble, and A.Ta.jßaatti had a shot at goal. Rewhili ciei red from the goal posts, and a couple o£ fine movements by the Arapuni backs saw Keliy throw a try away onteach occasion by giving untakeaMe passes to bis wing man, Edwards shone up ip loosfe and relieved tse pressure. Petherick got ©ffsMe saftd the yeßow and blacks attacked. A great rush by the pack was spoilt by a forward .handling the ball on flue ground, and the good work of the forwards was thus nullified. Hannan and Petherick led a rush to the other end, but Woolliams marked. Cormaek led a great rush to the Arapuni 25, but quarter-time sounded with m© score. Williams led a solid forward attack

to the Te Whetu line, where Woolliams brought off a somewhat lucky save by dribbling to the corner-flag. Kelly marked in a handy position, but the kick fell short. Dougherty left the field at this period with a nasty cut over the eye, and McKernon took his place. Jensen got offside, and following the free play settled in midfield. Thorpe took the ball from the toes of the Arapuni pack and kicked. hard he again secured and got clear, but through not realising the situation, passed forward, and a chance was lost. Arapuni attacked with great vim, and the comer flag being upset, a five yards scrum was ordered. Rewhiti worked the blind, and forced himself over, but failed 1 with the kick. I The next item-was foolish offside l play by Jones, and later a mark by . Williams handy to ,the posts. The I drop fell short, and half-time sounded ! shortly afterwards. Te Whetu 3, Arapuni 0. Jones led the yellow and black pack in a rush but Robertson secured and i etterick carried on to the 25 line. Edwards came to the rescue and with a run and kick he found touch at the other end. Thomas shone out, and Mitchell failed with a good kick at goal. Hannan led a green rush and from a free Kiti failed. Rewhiti got 1 offside and Edwards took the k.ek and aimed for the line. Kiti gathered brilliantly, and, cro.sskick.ng to Kelly, the latter held oil too long. Majcowan was temporarily hurt, and the, third spell ended without further score. Cormaek and Hearn led a great attack and Kiti just saved in time. From a throw in on the line Petherick got away to half-way. Robertson secured and served Keliy, who ran 30 yards and sidestepped the full-back in g-reat style to score 10 yards from ■the flag. Green converted with a fine kick. The game was now being played at a great rate, and Referee Bennett took no chances when he caught Bright and V/. Hearn in an attitude not associated with the football field. The Te Whetu backs appeared very weak at this period, though the pack was putting in great work. Cormaek, Butt and F. Hearn led a determined attack, and a free was given near the posts. Edwards allowed himself a short feur yards, and the ball failed to pass the Arapuni forwards. From then on Te Whetu were a beaten team. Arapuni secured a free and Petherick made a solo effort to the line but knocked on. A long green fol],-w°d till Edwards brought relief. A short attack was nipped in the bud by a timely mark by Green. Arapuni quickly returned and a nice round of passing saw Kelly again hang on too long with Kiti waiting for a possible try. Keeping at it, weak defence in the centre let Petherick in under the posts, but the easy kick was missed. Final scores : Arapuni, 8 points (1 goal, l try) ; Te Whetu, 3 points (1 try). This game was played at Tokoroa and resulted in a convincing win for tile home team by 19 points to 5. The Tokoroa backs ' handled .the ball well j. but they did not gain much ground. £ On the other hand the forwards, by £ means of loose rushes, continually put the black and whites on the often- . sive. Waoto scored for Putaruru and . McEwin converted. Most of the To- j koroa points were gained by the for- j wards. , Applegrin and M. ftrown shone out amongst the Putaruru forwards, while Munro was a great grafter at halfhack, but was obviously not suited to this position. His weight and strength, were missed in the tight. Sanne at three-quarters played soundly but was handicapped with an injured knee. T. f Conaghan, also at three-quarters, showed good form and should improve in future games. McEwin at fullback played a great game and was | wasted so far back,' as he is of the 1 dashing type. G. Brown appeared to be nervous and failed to take the ball on the full. He lost his side much ett-ound through this error in play. The game as a whole was keen and was played in the best of spirit by both sides. Mr. E. Thorpe was referee.
