ARBOR DAY.
Notwithstanding that very little interest appeared to be taken by the general public iu tlie proposal of tlie County Council to plant treeg on either side of the main road running through the township of Pahiatua, yet after the proceedings had commenced on Saturday a sudden desire seemed to possess those who had gathered around for curiosity to take part in the proceedings. Shortly after 11 o’clock the Town Hand struck up a lively air near near Mr Gregory’s store, where the tree-planting was to start, and soon there were about 60 or 70 persons present.
The Chairman of the County Council (Mr J. Vile) briefly stated the object of the gathering, and he congratulated the inaugurator of the movement iMrT. Miller; on having brought the matter before the Council. Hitherto the people of Pahiatua had been denuding the district of its timber ; now they proposed to begin planting, and lie believed the work begun that day would be followed up with great advantage to the district.
Mr T. Miller next spoke, and said that he was induced to bring the matter forward from what he had read on tree planting in the Scientific American. He considered that it was one of the best things that could possibly be done in the township. It had first been proposed iu the Council to plant poplars along the main road, but the idea did not seem to be popular, and lie bad suggested that an Arbm Day befixed, when hardwood trees might be planted. His suggestion bad been adopted, and be hoped that the day would be observed annually so that the remainder of the main road would soon be planted. Mr lleese thought the scheme an admirable one He did not know of a better plan for a man to perpetuate his name than by planting a tree on on occasion like the present, or getting married, and he hoped as many as possible would take advantage of the opportunity and plant a tree. The first tree was then planted by the Chairman of the County Council, followed by other members of the Council, Town Hoard, and residents of town and country. The enclosures an which the trees were to be planted
had been numbered, and a record will be kept in the Countv offices of the tree planted by each individual. Those who took an active part in the proceedings may lie said to have a direct claim on the trees planted by them, and they will no doubt attend carefully to their charges. The Hand played throughout the day, the music adding greatly to the success of the prjOMtlings. The following is a list of the trees planted : No. Name of Tree. Flamed by 1 byoamor* Job Vile 2 Oak G.
