Island News.
The 8.8. Richmond arrived at Auckland front the Islands on Friday. Among the passengers were the Ilev. Shirley Raker (Premier of Tonga) and family, the Rev. Mr Cooper, an English missionary from Haiatea, and llcrr Munel, German Consul ut Tahiti.
A hurricane raged at Rarotonga from the 2‘2ud to the 20th January, and much damage wits done, 70 or HO houses being blown down. The schooner Atlantic belonging to Messrs Donald and Kdenborough, was driven on a reef and became a total wreck, hut no lives were lost.
The Vice-King of Raiatea, with the chiefs and notables of the island, visited Tahiti on the 21th January, with a request for annexation to France. The General Assembly ratified the request of the Governor of Tahiti, and received the deputation cordially. They promised to send the request to the French Government. The deputation visited the Admiral on the Du Quesne, and received a salute of 21 guns.
