On receipt of the cable stating that the Premier had wntlen to bir Dillon Bell et|acting defeat, the Proa* Association communicated with tire Government, and received a reply from Sir Kobert Stout, in which he denied the truth of the cablegram, and Mtatcs that ho uever wrote to the Agent-General otlicially on the subject, lie sent Sir Dillon Dell a private letter informing linn of the events of the session and his appeal to the country, and told him it was impossible to predict what would li&ppeu, as both aides were coulident of success ; but the Government would be defeated if tiio people listened to tin* abuse of the Opposition press. Sir Kobert is ama/ed that the contents of a private letter should have been made public. especially in a garbled and utterly incorrect form. A hair dresser named George Williams was arrested yesterday afternoon charged with rape on a girl aged 11 years. A ten-roomed dwelling-house, situated in the Ilorokiwi Valiev, owned and occupied i\v Kichard Smith and family, was destroyed by lire early on Saturday morning. The origin of it is unknown, but is bolieved to have occurred in the kitchen. The occupants barely escaped with tiieir lives, an l nothing whatever was saved. John Matheson, insurance agent, was committed f *r trial yesterday for robbing and assaulting a Chinaman, who is a hawker on tin* road. Matheson asked to • his license, demanding jfl at the same time. The Chinaman was rather slow in complying, when Matheson struck him aid knocked hi* goods about. The Chinai iau eventually handed ovi r 10s to get rid « I him, but took a good look so a» to identify him, and then informed the police. • Mr John Cuddy died very suddenly Yt-Ucrday, it is supposed from heart disease. He had retired about a year ago on a pei on after serving in Registry Ollice. It is proposed to introduce the labor li«t here in connection with persons obtaining assistance from the Benevolent Committee. Applicants on receiving assistance will be asked to do work equivalent to reiiof. Christchurch, This Day. The bo l v of a man, apparently drowned, li is been found on the Waimak&riri river bank near the out fall of Stewart's gully. The body is suppose*! to be that of Henry Fernith who suddenly left his home iu Kampoi on May 21 last, and has not since been heard of. He was supposed to have coininitte 1 suicide from an expression ho made use of. The police for some time afterwards made diligent search in tho river and along the banks without avail.
