There should be plenty, of potatoes in Britain this year. Early in May the Food Controller announced that statistics showed that the area sown exceeded that in 1917 by 25 per cent. At that time 900,000 acres were under crop, and plenty of seed was still available. The entire crop will be purchased by the Ministry for Food. In the Dominion people might well follow Britain's example and grow potatoes for themselves instead of merely growling about the cost of living. The London Financial Mail of March 2 says: “Having a boat torpedoed is not altogether an unprofitable misfortune for shareholders, as is so very generally supposed. Thus, a company formed with a capital of £15,000 built a new boat at a cost of £40,000. She was insured, of course; also torpedoed. Insurance money paid over amounted to £106,000. Not bad business for the lucky part shareholders!”
