The natural modesty of the average New Zealand soldier, when he is asked to take a conspicuous part in public gatherings, is proverbial, and was plainly evident at last evening's function given in honour of the local boys who have returned from tho front, says Wednesday's Picton “Press." There was a fair number of soldiers present, but they were lost among the crowd at the back of the hall, and all the appeals to show themselves fell upon deaf ears. In some cases, it was also noticed that discharged men sought to hide their identity by not wearing their badges of service. As the night advanced, however, and the danger—as one soldier put it —of “making a picture show of themselves” was past, the boys became more prominent, and the majority of those present joined heartily in the dancing portion of the programme.
